Accra, March 23, GNA - Mr Abu Jinapor, the Deputy Chief of Staff, has said this year’s Miss Ghana pageant has been designated as an official event for the country’s 60th anniversary celebration.
President Akufo-Addo, he said, has endorsed the pageant, adding that the activities embarked on by winners of the event would go a long way to better the social and economic wellbeing of Ghanaians.
Mr Jinapor was speaking at the media launch of Miss Ghana@ 60 in Accra.
“In as much as we are promoting arts, culture and entertainment, there is something substantial in it,” Mr. Jinapor added.
Mrs Catherine Afeku, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, described the pageant as symbolic as it was commissioned by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah 60 years ago.
“I think this is a nice synchronisation and I urge the public and everyone to support it,” she said.
She commended the organisers of the pageant and past beauty queens and expressed the hope that together they would make this year’s event successful. Madam Inna Mariam Patty, the CEO of Exclusive Events, organisers of Miss Ghana and a past queen, said this year’s pageant celebrates 60 years with Ghana and 13 years since it partnered with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to project tourism during their reign.
Madam Patty thanked the President, Deputy Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Ghana@60 Committee, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the media for the support over the years.
“The aim of the pageant still remains ‘Beauty with a purpose,” she added.
The Miss Ghana Beauty Pageant was started by the first President of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah in 1957 as an initiative to offer the “Independent” Ghanaian woman a platform to positively impact society.
The winner of the competition represents the country at the Miss World to compete with beauty queens worldwide.
The winner also signs a one-year contract with the pageant organiser to become the spokesperson for their various charities.
