Kumasi, Mar 29, GNA – A private teacher training institution, Jackson College of Education, has announced plans to set up a Foundation to provide support to trainee-teachers from poor homes, who gain admission to the college.
Mrs. Theodosia Jackson, the Principal, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that it would be officially launched in Kumasi on Wednesday, April 05.
She said they were targeting to raise GH¢ 500.000.00 as seed money.
It would involve paying for their tuition fees and the supply of the basic materials needed for their training.
Mrs. Jackson said the first batch of beneficiaries would be selected at the start of this academic year.
The College, which is affiliated to the University of Education, Winneba, has a student population above 6,000, about 40 per cent is from deprived rural communities.
The Principal said the goal was to provide opportunity for the poor, eager to join the teaching profession, to live their dream.
This way, more qualified teachers would be produced to serve in deprived schools across the nation to raise the quality of education.
Mrs. Jackson rallied everybody – corporate institutions, religious bodies and individuals to back the initiative, saying, it was a noble cause to support.
