Ho, April 3, GNA - Participants at Accountable Democratic Institutions and Systems Strengthening (ADISS) zonal workshop in Ho have reminded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of his promise to change the status of corruption in the criminal code from a misdemeanour to a felony.
They held that making corruption a felony was the most effective way of fighting the practice and urged the President to make good his promise and in time.
“This is what we have been pushing for and we can’t wait to see action from the President,” Mr Bright Sowu, Senior Research Officer, Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition said at the workshop.
He said with the President having done 100 days already in office, anti-corruption campaigners were waiting to see the processes started towards amending necessary laws to make corruption unattractive.
The participants also prayed the government to tighten laws on corruption and close all gaps to make the fight against dishonest use of trusted power effective.
They said last Parliament’s inability to pass the Right To Information (RTI) Bill frustrated their campaign and challenged the current government to push the Bill through as a demonstration of its commitment to the fight against corruption.
“This is a big deal. If RTI becomes a law, much of our work on anti-corruption is done and we hope it is passed by this Parliament,” a Participant said.
ADISS is made up of three anti-corruption institutions; the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, Ghana Integrity Initiative and SEND Ghana with support from USAID to mobilise citizens for a common voice on anti-corruption.
