Kumasi, April 25, GNA – A suspected robber, who has been on the police wanted list for some time now, has been gunned down and two of his colleagues, arrested and detained by the police in Kumasi.
They had attacked and robbed some Chinese of their Honda Accord saloon car, 10 mobile phones, two lap top computers, a pump action gun and cash of GH?3,000.00 in the mining town of Obuasi.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Ken Yeboah, the Ashanti Regional Commander, identified the deceased as Kwaku Asare.
He gave the names of the pair, they were holding as Philip Kwadwo Danso and Daniel Kwadwo Asamoah.
He told a media briefing in Kumasi that a pump action gun, locally made pistols, military uniform and masks were seized from them.
The stolen car, he added, had also been recovered by the police.
DCOP Yeboah said three other suspects – Acheampong alias “IK’, Kwasi alias “Selasi and Yaw, however managed to slip through and they had launched a massive manhunt to arrest and bring them to justice.
He said the Obuasi police received information about the robbery, last Sunday, and alerted the various patrol teams in the region and personnel manning the checkpoints.
Barely 24 hours after the crime, the regional anti-robbery squad, was tipped off that the stolen car had been sent to a washing bay at Krofrom in Kumasi and quickly moved to the place, where Danso and Asamoah were caught right in the act of replacing the number plate.
They confessed stealing the car from the owners and mentioned their accomplices including the deceased, who was traced to Sofoline.
He was shot and killed as he attempted to escape and his body had been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s morgue.
A search of Danso’ room at Obuasi uncovered two pump action guns, two locally made pistols and a live cartridge.
The pair also led the police to retrieve the original number plate of the car from a nearby bush.
DCOP Yeboah indicated that that Asare, Acheampong and Danso had been on the police wanted list for terrorizing miners at the Manso-Watreso and its surroundings.
He called for their victims to come forward to assist the police in their investigations.
