Accra, May 5, GNA-The Ghana News Agency (GNA) in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited would on Saturday undertake a clean-up exercise as part of the Agency’s 60th Anniversary.
The exercise, which would start from the Agency’s premises, would also be extended to the Ministries area as well.
GNA, the largest news gathering organisation and only wire service in Ghana, was established on the eve of Ghana’s independence, March 5th,1957, by the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah as part of the information arm of the State to help build a proud, viable and cohesive nation.
It was also to help project the African identity in the comity of nations by telling the African story from the African perspective; while freeing the citizens from the mentality of colonial superiority and dependency.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Rex Annan, Acting General Manager of the Agency said as the nation’s only wire service, the Agency had gone through stages of challenges to provide credible, reliable, qualitative and comprehensive news to media and online outlets in Ghana.
He noted that the Agency had been successful in communicating government policies, educating the populace on what affects their daily lives and also, provided the Executive with feedback of the effects of its policies.
“In spite of the challenges, the Agency continues to be very strong on the ground, especially in the rural areas, where the majority of our people, whose needs and wants daily occupy the minds of the government”, he added.
He expressed concern about the competition the Agency was facing in the era of digital innovation and a vibrant social media, and called for the need for government to help strengthen its digital drive to remain relevant in today’s ever demanding and challenging digital world.
Mr Robert Coleman, Communications Manager of Zoomlion, Ghana’s foremost waste management giant, paid a glowing tribute GNA for its immense contribution in shaping the nation over the past 60 years.
He commended GNA for its reliable, credible and unbiased stories it generated for its clients and expressed the joy for Zoomlion’s partnership with the nation’s only wire service in clearing the filth at the ministries and its environs.
“This collaboration is just the beginning of or long term engagement and Zoomlion would be strengthening it to ensure that it achieves its core mandate of propagating government’s policies on sanitation and the environment”.
He expressed worry on the challenges the Agency faced with the digital ear and called for the need to have innovative ways of catching up and to match the competition.
The theme for the year-long celebration is “Ghana News Agency @60: Advancing the Ghanaian Dream”,
Activities lined up for the year include; Health screening, sporting activities, awards night, visit to an orphanage and a thanksgiving service to crown it all.
