Agbozume, May 5, GNA – Communities along the Keta lagoon in the Ketu South Municipality have appealed to government to resolve the misunderstanding between them and the Seven Seas Salt Company at Adina.
They said though promises had been made towards resolving the issue, the people had reached “suffocating levels” and needed quick solutions.
Residents from Sonto, Afiadenyigba, Task-Corner, Dogbekope and Kpedzakope at a press conference at Agbozume-Sonto alleged that the Company had taken over areas demarcated for their traditional salt winning activities, with adverse effects on their livelihood and called for government’s early intervention.
Togbi Hunor Besa Yedzesiwo, an opinion leader of the communities accused the Company of being the cause of the wilting of coconut trees in the area through the pumping of underground water into reservoirs for their work instead of sea water as they promised.
He said the use of the underground water by the Company had caused their domestic wells to dry up, distressing them, especially women and called for government’s intervention.
