Adaklu-Wumenu (V/R), May 5, GNA - Right Reverend Dr S. K. Ofori says Catechists’ role as co-leaders is unique and key to the advancement of the Church, and urged them to recognise and accept their role as a calling from God.
“The Catechist is an assistant. He is the first and almost the closest assistance to a congregational leader in the Global Evangelical Church. The congregational leader can be a Pastor or an Evangelist,” he said.
The Moderator said this at the 2017 National Catechists Conference held at the Global Evangelical Church’s Retreat Centre at Adaklu-Wumenu.
He said that a number of congregations, which experienced cordial atmosphere and development, were as a result of the role such Catechists played in their respective congregations.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Ofori said though the name ‘Catechist’ is not found in the Bible, the role of the Catechist as a co-leader abounds and depicts the roles of a steward, administrator and a team player.
He cited Daniel in the Bible as an example of a co-leader who performed creditably under eight Kings, and though Nebuchadnezzar was a notorious leader, Daniel did not undermine him.
“What some co-leaders do is that when their prime leaders are absent, then they quickly want to change policies or create new ones to please themselves and other people,” the Moderator said.
He urged Catechists not only to be effective but efficient to enable them serve to improve on their congregations and ensure orderliness in the Church as a whole.
Catechist Godwin Aklamanu, National President of the Catechists Association, in his welcome address, decried inordinate attitudes of some Catechists, cautioning they desisted from such behaviours.
He said this year’s Conference had witnessed a greater response and enthusiasm and increase in the number of participants.
