Accra, May 6, GNA- The Ghana News Agency (GNA) as part of its 60th anniversary celebration, on Saturday together with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, embarked on a clean-up exercise at the Agency’s premises and the surrounding environment.
The five-hour exercise, which began at 0700hrs involved the de-silting of gutters, sweeping and the collection of refuse heaps mounted at various streets.
Mr Rex Annan, the Acting General Manager of the Agency, commended the staff of the Agency and the Zoomlion for the good job done, saying, “Poor sanitation has been a problem in the country for some time now, therefore, it is necessary for every organisation, especially the media to put the issue on their agenda to ensure a clean Ghana.”
He said the GNA is committed to educating and informing the public on sanitation and urged the public to embrace good waste management practices such that needed resources would not be spent by the state on sanitation and environment related concerns.
“Our media house continues to be a key stakeholder in the fight against poor sanitation,” Mr Annan said adding that, “We are resolute in helping Government fight this menace to protect the lives of Ghanaians from cholera, dysentery and other sanitation related diseases.”
The Acting Manager called on the public to pay attention to their environs and desist from all acts that constituted poor sanitation practices “especially in these months of rain”.
Mr James Deku, a Communications Officer with the Zoomlion, said the Company found it befitting to partner the Agency because they were both key stakeholders in advancing the Ghanaian dream of achieving a prosperous nation with all hands on deck.
He said, “Zoomlion is excited to associate itself with the Ghana News Agency because it remains the provider of excellent, credible and accurate information over the past 60 years.”
Mr Deku said his company has rolled out a strategy to partner with the media to send a message to the general public that the keeping of the environment was a shared responsibility and that all Ghanaians should embrace good sanitation practices.
He said Zoomlion was committed to helping the Akuffo-Addo-led administration to achieve its aim of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.
Mr Deku said Zoomlion is set to distribute one million dustbins to all houses in Accra through Metropolitan and Municipal Authorities.
GNA, the largest news gathering organisation and only wire service in Ghana, was established on the eve of Ghana’s independence, March 5, 1957, by the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah as part of the information arm of the State to help build a proud, viable and cohesive nation.
It was also to help project the African identity in the comity of nations by telling the African story from the African perspective; while freeing the citizens from the mentality of colonial superiority and dependency.
The theme for the year-long celebration is “Ghana News Agency @60: Advancing the Ghanaian Dream”.
Activities lined up for the year include; Health screening, sporting activities, awards night, visit to an orphanage and a thanksgiving service.
