Accra, May 6, GNA - About 10, 000 pupils are expected to participate in the 2017 U-13 Milo Champions league, which begins on 17- 19 May, in Tamale.
The championship will be staged in four zones, where teams from the Northern, Upper East, Upper West will play the first match the competition commences, teams from zone two in the Brong Ahafo, and Ashanti would play on 24-26 May at the Sunyani Senior High, whilst the Ghana Secondary Technical School would host teams from the Western and Central in Zone three, five days later and the fourth zone with teams from the Greater Accra, Eastern and volta to play on 7-9 June at the Presbyterian School at Legon, Accra with the final competition billed for 20-24 June in Elmina, Cape Coast.
In all, 48 schools across the country qualified to the championship themed " Building Champions in Life ".
Speaking at the launch ceremony at the Nestle Ghana Limited head office in Accra on Friday, the Category Manager, Beverages Mrs Fumi Osineye said, Milo is committed to inspire the youth of Ghana to become their very best by embracing good sports values of confidence, respect, determination and team work which are necessary for success in life.
She added that, the youth will be imbibed with the knowledge that winning is more than just coming first, but a sense of achievement and the joy of participating knowing that they have done their best.
The Managing Director of Nestle Ghana Limited Mrs. Freda Duplan mentioned that, success building in life starts with the right foundations " Sports, mentoring and coaching provide a great opportunity to instil values that build future champions. "
According to her, the Milo U13 tourney also aims at promoting and demonstrating the importance of eating healthy and living an active lifestyle while making the children ambassadors of healthy living.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Issac Asiamah requested to the organisers to included Women's U13 in their next championship adding that it would be a burden on the government.
He thanked Nestle Ghana for the initiative and assured his outfit's commitment to support the tourney.
The Deputy Minister of Education Barbara Ayisi Acher stressed that, the government through the Ministries of Education and Youth and Sports, is committed to promoting sports at the basic level and is supportive of corporate initiatives, which include the Milo U-13 Champions league.
The Deputy Minister was confident the children will approach their studies with the same zeal and commitment in the event.
She wished the participating teams the best as they prepare in their bid to be crowned champions of the tourney.
During the league, the tournament's ambassador icon and former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah would be training the pupils on basic football skills and rudiments and also inculcate in them the values of teamwork, confidence, respect and focus in sports.
At the end of the tourney, the fair play team, best player, highest goal scorer and the best goal keeper would all be awarded for their individual brilliance in the competition.
The Milo U13 champions league is organised with the Ghana Education Service and support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
