Tamale, May 10, GNA – The government has been asked to come out with a quota system to reserve some appointments in the public sector for the youth, to promote inclusive governance.
Madam Hafsatu Sey Sumani, Head of Programmes and Policy at NORSAAC, an NGO who made the call, said the seeming neglect of the youth in decision making was affecting youth development in the country.
She made the call at a stakeholders’ forum in Tamale on ensuring inclusive governance in the country organised by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) with funding from Ford Foundation.
The forum, attended by various stakeholders including persons with disability, women groups, youth groups, and security services, discussed inclusive governance and the need to involve all in decision making for the development of the country.
Madam Sumani said a lot more needed to be done to empower the youth and mobilise them to meaningfully contribute to the development of the country.
She called for a review of the Youth Employment Agency to provide sustainable jobs for the youth.
Mr Mohammed Gadaffi, Northern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, expressed disappointment at the fact that only few disabled persons constituted government appointees to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
Mr Gadaffi called for inclusion of persons with disability in development planning at the various levels of government to enable them to articulate their concerns.
Professor Alhassan Amin, Dean of the Faculty of Agribusiness and Communications Studies of the University for Development Studies, called for a more balanced relationship between the ruling class and the people to enhance accountability.
Mrs Dora Mawutor, Programme Manager in-charge of Freedom of Expression at MFWA said it was not good to have only few women participating in decision making when they were in majority in the country.
