Tumiabu (Ash), July 27, GNA – The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bosome-Freho, Mr. Yaw Danso, has expressed worry about the increasingly number of young girls getting pregnant in the area.
He indicated that the rate at which they were seeing child mothers was deeply troubling and a major headache.
He did not give figures but said the district had the highest reported cases of teenage pregnancy in the Ashanti Region.
Mr. Danso added that this had resulted in many a school girl dropping out of school.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a three unit classroom block with an office donated to the Tumiabu D/A Basic School in the district by British philanthropist, Mrs. Mary Brooks.
Mrs. Brooks is friend to the Reverend Dr. Hayford Ofori-Atta, Superintendent Minister of the Methodist Church in Yorkshire, England, who is a native of the town.
The GH¢100,000.00 classroom block is to complement the effort, the Rev Ofori-Atta and his wife, Agnes, have been making over the past 13 years towards education development in the area.
The couple has instituted an educational award scheme under which financial assistance is given to brilliant pupils in basic schools at the Tumiabu, Morontuo and Dunkura communities, where they started their education.
The inauguration ceremony coincided with the presentation of this year’s cash awards to deserving pupils from the three communities and the donation of footballs and educational materials to the schools.
Mr. Danso reminded everybody that girl-child education was vital to the fight against poverty and therefore it was incumbent on parents to provide them with adequate protection, to pursue academic careers.
He said they had a responsibility to ensure that children did not only enroll in school but retained.
The Rev Dr. Ofori-Atta said the classroom block was the contribution of Mrs. Brooks to the promotion of quality education in the community.
He asked the pupils to be inspired by the gesture to work hard on their books.
The Most Rev Professor Daniel Yinka Sarfo, Anglican Archbishop Bishop of the Province of West Africa, who supervised the construction of the project, applauded Mrs. Brooks and Rev. Dr Ofori-Atta, for the care and interest in the development of the youth in the area.
Barima Ofe Kwasi Okotwaresuo, Omanhene of Kokofu, urged the people to show ownership of the project – make sure that it was kept in good shape at all times.
