Tamale, July 27, GNA - The Vice President, Dr Mahamud Bawumia, has expressed worry about the floods that caused havoc leading to the death of a female teacher and loss of property in the Tamale Metropolis.
He conveyed the Government’s condolences to the family of the teacher, Hajia Fati Bapuni, who was swept away by the floods in her vehicle, and presented GHC 5,000 to the family.
He gave the assurance that government would step in with support for displaced persons to alleviate their plight.
Vice President Bawumia was speaking in Tamale when he led a delegation to visit the flood hit areas in the Metropolis and to assess the extent of damage to lives and property and see how best government could immediately assist.
Areas the Vice President visited included the ‘Rice City’ where the female teacher lost her life, Gumani and Kanvili.
He said assessment would be made for swift intervention to ensure that such disasters were either reduced or stopped to save lives and property.
Vice President Bawumia tasked engineers in the region to take immediate steps to reconstruct the bridges destroyed by the floods and gave the assurance that government would provide funds for their reconstruction.
He was accompanied by Mr Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister of Defence, Mr Ambrose Dery, the Minister of the Interior, and Mr Mustapha Hamid, the Minister of Information.
The delegation was joined by Mr Salifu Saeed, the Northern Regional Minister and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) during the assessment.
A downpour that lasted for about an hour on Tuesday morning within the Tamale Metropolis led to severe flooding that killed a female teacher and destroyed a number of property.
