Accra, Oct. 2, GNA – Standard Chartered Bank has presented cheques to 33 students under its Science and Kenneth Dadzi Memorial Endowment Fund.
The 33 students were drawn from the five public Universities including University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, University of Education, Winneba and the University of Development Studies.
The support, which is in the form of a scholarship, is for students in the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Mrs Mansa Nettey, the Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Bank presenting the cheques said the Bank was a strong believer in education and has always made efforts to support the educational sector.
“Today, we reemphasize the value we place on education through our financial support for the 33 young and brilliant students, who have joined us from 5 Ghanaian public universities,” she said.
She said 57 million children remain out of school and more than 50 per cent of these live in sub-Saharan Africa with 103 million youth worldwide lacking basic literacy skills and more than 60 per cent of them were women.
She said across the Bank’s footprint, education remained a key component of its community investment.
The CEO said the Bank recently launched the “Goal” programme, which sought to empower adolescent girls through sport and life skills education, so that they could make informed life choices throughout life.
“The Bank aims to provide training to 800 girls in the first year,” she added.
She said the Bank’s employees were also encouraged to volunteer their skills and time to provide financial education to the youth, especially Senior High School students.
She said the scholarship was to support these students throughout their course of study and “we hope that the financial assistance you receive from the Fund would inspire each one of you to want to learn and make a significant impact in the world.”
She expressed confidence that the opportunities being afforded them in the various Universities and the support from Standard Chartered would serve as springboard to enable them achieve their full potential.
Mrs Nettey encouraged the students to continue working hard to make their families and yourselves proud.
