Assin-Fosu, (C/R), Mar. 5, GNA - The Assin North Municipal Assembly (ANOMA), has embarked on a massive clean-up exercise as part of the Assembly's renewed effort to effectively rid the Municipality of filth.
The exercise which began around 6.00 a.m witnessed impressive work done by individuals, Assembly's staff, groups, religious organizations and traditional leaders in communities including Bantema, main station, Mempeasem, Atonsu, Nsuakyire, Pomping-side, Dompim, Pantuase among others.
Mr Emmanuel Agyare, the Municipal Environmental Officer, led the exercise as they swept the streets, de - silted gutters and drains and cleared weeds and later evacuated various heaps of mountainous garbage to dump site.
Various transport operators and drivers also undertook general cleaning of all lorry parks and bus stations with minimal movement of vehicles except emergency and security services.
The Municipal Environmental Officer spoke on the need for all to assist keep the area clean to prevent diseases and noted that "dumping of refuse in gutters and drains was a major challenge the assembly was facing."
Mr Agyare said after the exercise, the Assembly will embark on public education on the need for the residents in the metropolis to take up the exercise and make it part of their daily activity and advised the public to always keep their surroundings tidy and cease throwing rubbish into gutters.
He advised the residents to take the exercise seriously because the Assembly would strictly enforce all the environmental and sanitation laws soon and all individuals and institutions who flout them would face the law.
ANOMA encouraged all business entities, traders and transport operators to continually clean their respective areas to assist the Assembly achieve the President’s vision to keep the Country clean.
The participants expressed gratitude to the Assembly for organizing the clean-up exercise and suggested that it should be carried out at least twice in every month.
However, some residents who boycotted the exercise in an interview with the Ghana News Agency cited the lack of basic logistics such as gloves, nose mask, shovel, brooms, wheel barrows and containers were not made available to them.
Others said they were not properly informed about the day and time of the exercise.
