Gomoa Potsin holds forum on programme selection for JHS students
Gomoa Potsin (C/R) April 14, GNA - Stakeholders forum themed “Programme selection: what the Junior School, Student should know” has been held at Gomoa Potsin.
It was organised by the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Psychology and Education Department (Guidance and Counselling) Practicum II Group 2, to help the final year students of Gomoa Potsin and Dominase D/A Junior High Schools (JHS) to make informed choices.
They also hoped that trained counsellors would be posted to the area to help them in selecting programmes of their abilities and interest to peruse in the Second Cycle Institutions.
Dr. Daniel Kobla Buku and Mr. Samuel Richard Ziggah, lecturers of UEW were the supervisors of the programme, while Mr. Roland Takyi Guidance and Counselling Unit Programmes Officer of Ghana Education Service (GES) Headquarters and Mrs. Gertrude Efe Brew, Guidance and Counselling Coordinator of Effutu Municipal Directorate of the GES were the resources persons.
Mr. Victor Elorm Ahorlu, leader of the group in a presentation stated that, Practicum is a course that involved demonstration of the necessary services acquired to help address societal issues.
“Education is a tool for national development, it should therefore be the number one prime need of governments and the society as a whole, by paying much attention on the children’s education at the basic school level in terms of programme selection to enable them progress to Senior High Level without hindrances”.
Mr Ahorlu indicated that, programmes students select sets the foundation for their self-development saying, interest, ability, capability, strength and weaknesses, threats were elements guide on the individual to discover him or her (self).
He emphasised the need for stakeholders in the education of children to work harder to create enabling environment that would help solve the problems of programme selection at the basic levels which become a major setback for a lot of students.
The participants were taken through topics such as; what junior high school students should know before selecting a programme to study, Knowledge of the programme, Classification of second cycle schools, Programmes offered at the Senior High Schools.
Others were; Elective subjects, Programmes and their related careers, Issues surrounding programme selection, Role of parents, Role of students and counselling implications.
Nana Tweiku Adasoa IX Odikro of Gomoa Potsin who chaired the event expressed his gratitude to the organizers, and called for periodic organisation of such educative programmes at the various basic schools in the country to help parents and their children to select programmes of their ability and interest towards their development.
