ACCRA, July 31 (GNA/Xinhua) - The African Port Award (APA) Foundation conferred here on Tuesday a special award on Ghana's president Nana Akufo-Addo for his efforts in modernizing Ghana's ports.
The award which was conferred during the ongoing 39th Council & Conference of Ports Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA) was in recognition for Akufo-Addo's "personal and government's commitment to modernizing Ghana's ports.
President of the Foundation, Guy Manouan, praised Akufo-Addo for the quality work "being undertaken at the ports, which have made them more attractive for maritime trade."
The PMAWCA conference being held in Ghana has in attendance directors of ports from 15 West and Central African countries as well as representatives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other key stakeholders in the management of ports.
Among the ongoing reforms at the ports in the West African gold, cocoa and oil exporting country, include the implementation of a paperless clearing process and a drastic reduction in the number of regulatory agencies undertaking inspections from 16 to three.
There is also a dramatic improvement in the turnaround time for clearing of goods, reducing cost and bringing about greater efficiency.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia received the award on behalf of the president.
