Winneba (C/R) Aug 10, GNA - Rev. Father Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Education Winneba, has said that the services of Geographers are needed in all sectors of the economy due to the diverse nature of issues they deal with.
He said, it can therefore not be a missing link in Ghana’s development and with regard people who have the perception that does not exist should eschew such notion.
According to him, Geography was one of the interesting disciplines that transcended all human endeavours.
Rev. Father Afful-Broni said this at the Ghana Geographers Association (GGA) 2018 Annual Conference, which is underway in Winneba.
The Conference themed “Geography-The Missing link in Ghana’s Development Agenda” is to share ideas academically, fraternise, showcase the outcomes of researchers, equip members with the current trends in a particular discipline and also deliberate on how they can promote Ghana’s discipline geography.
Rev. Father Afful-Broni noted that Professional associations such as the Ghana Geographers Association could not thrive very well without meetings, attending workshops and seminars, and it was it was as a result of these and many other reasons the management of UEW whole heartedly supported the course.
“I encourage each and every one of you to fully participate in such programmes, which opens up opportunities for members to take stock of the previous years as well as to strategies to forge ahead as a unify body to achieve the purpose it was formed,” he added.
He expressed the hope that as geographers, they would explore issues relating to both nature and humanity in all their deliberations during the four days they will stay in Winneba.
Dr. Ishmael Yaw Dadson, National President Ghana Geographers Association explained that the organisation was formed in 1958 to offer formal training, teaching or practice to geographers in the country.
He said the association had gone through several transformation and on behalf of the entire member of the association paid to the founding fathers, members, especially the Ghana Geography Teachers Association who had played a pivotal role in the existence of the Association.
“The GGA gives training to its members, educate, disseminate information and coordinate the activities of its members through researches, conferences among others”.
He said, the association had a number of challenges but the notable among then was the issue of funding and called for support to campaign for their course, especially in research activities since their contributions to the national development could not be overemphasised.
