Tarkwa (W/R), Sept. 26, GNA - The third edition of the Tarkwa branch of Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) conference was successful held at the weekend at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa.
More than 400 participates attended this year's conference, which was on the theme" Value addition in the extractive industry and supply chain integration towards economic growth".
The conference also touched on the extractive industry value addition, national suppliers development programme in mining: catalyzing industry development in Ghana, perspective on local content and value addition in the extractive sector and unlocking Ghana’s upstream and downstream petroleum potential.
A mentor of AusIMM, who doubles as the Commercial and Technical Advisor, Mineral Development, Oman, Mr Henry Antwi, who gave an over view of the AusIMM, said it was founded in 1893 and provides services to professionals engaged in all facets of the global resources sector.
"With a focus on providing leadership and opportunities to resource industry professionals, the AusIMM delivers an ongoing programme of professional development services to ensure their members are supported throughout their careers, enabling them to provide high-quality professional input to industry and the community," he stated.
He said AusIMM represented 13, 000 members drawn from all sections of the industry and assisted by a network of branches and societies in Australasia and internationally.
According to him, the Tarkwa chapter of AusIMM was formed in 2015 and have since instituted the annual conference to bring together industry expects, stakeholders in the mining sector, policy makers, academia and students.
He asserted that, the theme for this year was chosen because of government's initiatives on minerals base value addition, especially from bauxite to alumina and the national Suppliers Development Programme (SDP) to scale up domestic supplies capacity, capabilities and competitiveness which are critical conditions for reversing the trend of the industrialization and for Strengthening linkage between mineral sector and other economic activities.
Dr. Peter Amponsah-Mensah, Director of Pamicor Limited, said students at the conference would be given training on how to be servant leaders to enable them take better decisions for the country in future.
He added that "once you become a servant leader you are prepared to work to protect the values of the country or organization".
In addition to professional development, Dr Amponsah-Mensah explained that the students would receive the benefit of supply chain in the whole process of mining.
He said people have the perception that “mining was just going down and digging”.
The mining industry is a game changer and unless we put firm strategies in place we can never achieve what we want," Dr. Amponsah-Mensah stressed.
