Sunyani, Oct. 11, GNA - Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF), has called for a concerted approach to address adversities that hinder girl-child education and training in the country.
He said as Ghana joins the world to mark the International Day of the Girl Child, there is the need for a collaborative effort to tackle factors impeding girl-child education.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, Mr Ahenu said there is the need to redefine girlhood by investing in the education and skills of girls, so as to set them on a path to achieve their greatest potentials.
The International Day of the Girl-child, which falls on October 11 every year, was instituted by the United Nations (UN) to promote human rights of girls and highlights gender equalities that remain between girls and boys.
Mr Ahenu said teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortion and school dropouts are impeding proper upbringing and development of girls in the country, hence the need for a collective approach to tackle these issues.
He said this year alone 20 million girls under 18 would be married and 21 million girls between aged 15 and 19 would become pregnant in developing countries.
Mr Ahenu said a quarter of young people, most of them girls in the country were neither employed nor getting an education or training, a situation contributing to the rise in teenage pregnancies.
He advised parents to be watchful about the movement of their girl-children, draw them closer and provide them with basic necessities of girlhood to make them comfortable in life.
GLOMEF is a human rights, media advocacy, education and health inclined Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) which works to promote the well-being of vulnerable people and groups in the country.
