Tamale, Oct 19, GNA – Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED Ghana) has reiterated its unwavering support for girls and young women, saying it will continue to work to improve their capacity and empower them with knowledge and skills to become economically independent.
Mr John Asibi Ali, National Director of CAMFED Ghana, who gave the assurance at CAMFED Ghana’s 25th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Tamale on Thursday, said this would position girls and young women to contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.
Mr Ali said “We will continue to multiply educational opportunities for girls and empower young women to become leaders of change”.
This year’s AGM, which coincided with the organization’s 25th anniversary, was to take stock of the previous year and strategize for the years ahead.
The event, which was on the theme: “25 Years of Empowering Young Women,” drew participants from civil society organizations, the public and private sectors.
Some beneficiaries of CAMFED Ghana’s programme referred to as CAMA members also exhibited some products, such as beads products, foot wears, shea butter amongst others at the AGM.
Mr Ali said “At the end of last year, 68,908 girls had been directly supported through secondary education with CAMFED scholarship, while 23,660 young women from rural communities are members of CAMA.”
He said “In addition, 2,299 teacher mentors and community mentors have been trained to support girls in 860 CAMFED partner schools. The number of CAMA members trained in business skills is 8,541, while 2,387 small businesses have been started by CAMA members, who have received a CAMFED loan, grant or training.”
He added that “The monetary value of resources contributed by community members and CAMA to support disadvantaged children to go to school is $2,823,860.”
Early this month, CAMFED Ghana signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Board for Small Scale Industries, which is within the framework of a transition programme that it was implementing in partnership, and with funding support from the Mastercard Foundation.
Mr Ali said the transition programme was designed, amongst others, to enable young women to transition from school to entrepreneurship, further study, employment and transformative leadership in the country.
He assured that CAMFED Ghana would continue to complement the efforts of government to expand access to quality education for all children.
Mr Joseph Kingsley Akuaboah, of the Guidance and Counselling Unit of the Ghana Education Service, congratulated CAMFED Ghana for its services to young women and girls as well as efforts to ensure safe schools and conditions conducive for teaching and learning.
He appealed to CAMFED Ghana to expand its programmes across the country to ensure that girls and young women in other parts of the country also benefited.
CAMFED Ghana, meanwhile, used the occasion to unveil a new logo, which represented its beliefs and spirit moving forward with its operations in the country.
CAMFED Ghana is a non-governmental organization, and works in 31 districts in Northern, Upper East, Upper West and Central Regions.
