Accra, Oct. 29, GNA - The Badminton Association of Ghana (BAG), has launched its Badminton in Schools Programme (BSP), at the West Africa Senior High School (WASHS) in Accra.
The launch was the 164th this year, since the commencement of the initiative.
BAG has set a target to introduce badminton to at least 200 schools across the country
by the end of the year under the BSP.
Under the BSP, 154 teachers from various schools were trained in June to assist in providing technical guidance to students, who want to get involved in badminton.
WASHS has been adopted by the Adenta Badminton Club to provide technical support, as well as logistic support to the school, to aid it produce more badminton stars.
Mr. Yeboah Evans, president of BAG said at the launch that, the Association was happy with the growing popularity of the sport, adding that the interest from the students was encouraging.
“Today’s launch was one of the products that were made out of the expectations of one of the schools, which is West Africa Senior High under the Badminton in Schools Programme.”
“It is a big day for us and West Africa Senior High School and for the Adenta Club in the Greater Accra region to be able to showcase what teaching lessons they have been able to practice with the school and for the students to exhibit their badminton skills, which is a growing popularity sport in Ghana.”
“We have linked our clubs (i.e the community clubs, the veteran clubs, social clubs) to these schools; so that they can be able to monitor and provide developmental assistance when necessary.”
Mr. Ken Gbeve, Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Badminton Association noted that that, it was a remarkable achievement for the region, because it was a giant step towards achieving their goal of developing the sport at the grass-root level.
Mr Emmanuel Otu Mensah, a staff of WASHS said, the school was happy with the opportunity to unearth talents to help a national course.
“This would go a long way to affect the lives of student and we are very happy. And
we hope that through this one of them becomes a national player or an international player.”
He said the school was ready to help the athletes manage their time well, so that it doesn’t affect their academic performance.
BAG would organise a national championship for schools in December and the winner of the championship would represent Ghana in the Africa Schools Championship, which would also be hosted in Ghana in December.
