Accra, Nov.1, GNA - His Beatitude Theodoros II, the Orthodox Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, will be in Ghana as part of his official visit to the holy Orthodox Archdiocese of Accra and Africa.
The Pope and Patriarch’s visit from Friday, November 2 to Monday, November 5 is said to have been the second to Ghana.
A statement from the Orthodox Church - Archdiocese of Accra and copied to the Ghana News Agency said, as part of the visit, there would be a welcome doxology service for His Beatitude at the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral at La Paz.
It said he would pay a courtesy call on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House inaugurate an ultra-modern computer lab at St. Peter’s College, located in Larteh in the Eastern Region, and would end with a pontifical divine liturgy on Sunday at La Paz in Accra.
The Orthodox Church is the second largest single Christian communion in the world, the statement said, adding that, “Orthodoxy arrived in the city of Alexandria in the early years with the Jewish in the diaspora who were believed to have a big community in Egypt at then.
It added that: “This is the evidenced in pages of the book of Acts with an instance in Acts 18:23-28, adding that “all Orthodox Patriarchs can trace their lineage back to one of the Apostles through the process called Apostolic Succession”.
The statement said, His Beatitude Theodoros II is the 116th on the throne after St. Mark, adding His Beatitude has a particular attachment to Africa, where he had worked for more than 10 years in his pastoral service before assuming the papacy position of the church.
It added that His Beatitude worked in Cameroun, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana and Angola and is also the primate of the Greek Orthodox Church and would visit Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone as part of his visit.
The statement said he would meet the faithful people as well as lay foundation block for the construction of a new church building in Ivory Coast and inaugurate an orphanage school for the people in Sierra Leone as part of his visit to those countries.
