Akramaman (GAR), Nov. 21, GNA — Mrs Nyamikeh Kyiamah, the National President of OMEP Ghana, a non-profit making organisation, has called on parents to take active interest in the education of their children so as to grow to become useful citizens and contribute to national development.
She said the situation where some parents neglected their responsibilities of providing their wards with the basic needs and spending huge sums on funerals and other social activities was not good enough.
Mrs Kyiamah made the call on Wednesday at this year’s Universal Children’s Day celebration at Akramaman, near Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The celebration was on the theme: “Children are Taking Over and Turning the World Blue.”
The Day is celebrated on November 20, every year, with a goal to improving child welfare worldwide, promote and celebrate children’s rights and promote togetherness and awareness amongst all children.
Initially launched in 1954, the Day had seen some milestone events in the field of child welfare.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and Convention of Children’s Rights.
It sets out a number of children’s rights such as the rights to be protected from violence and discrimination and the rights to life, health and education.
Mrs Kyiamah said: “The Day offers each of us an inspirational entry-point to advocate, promote and celebrate children’s rights, translating into dialogues and actions that will build a better world for children.”
“This year, the world is going blue. We want to build a world where every child is in school, safe from harm and can fulfil their potential, and we know you do too so we encourage all to get involve and Go Blue.”
Mrs Kyiamah said OMEP Ghana would continue to educate children, advocate on policies for children’s holistic development, embark on activities that promote the children’s well-being, health needs, nutrition, shelter, clothing and family support system.
Mr Samuel Narh Kodji, the Ga West Municipal Director of Education, urged students to be law-abiding and desist from all forms of negative tendencies that may ruin their future aspirations.
OMEP Ghana donated 50 desks to the St Paul’s Anglican Basic school at Akramaman to enhance teaching and learning.
Mr Samuel Ledford Mintah, the Head Teacher of the School, who received the items, thanked OMEP Ghana for the gesture and called on other benevolent organisations to go to their aid.
