Kumasi, Dec. 6, GNA - Mr Erasmus Asamoah-Cudjoe, Ashanti Regional Director of the Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS), a numerical literacy programme, has called on education stakeholders to take a second look at the study of mathematics.
“What we are missing now at the moment as a nation is the availability of adequate mathematics scholars,” he said adding that in this era of scientific age, the nation could no longer drag her feet in investing in this area of study.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, the Regional UCMAS Director said majority of developed countries towed this line in order to nurture the knowledgeable human resource base for accelerated growth.
This was on the side-line of a day’s arithmetic competition, which brought together about 18 schools to compete for honours.
The event was a prelude to the impeding global UCMAS competition scheduled for Malaysia, an event which would see 10 kids from the Region participating.
Mr Asamoah-Cudjoe said emerging development issues such as climate change and environmental degradation required technocrats with strong scientific backgrounds to tackle them.
Consequently, he advocated that UCMAS be made an extra-curricular activity at the basic and second-cycle level of learning to harness creative ability in the youth for development purposes.
UCMAS is a universal technical program that uses the abacus concept and other innovative learning techniques to develop the brain of children.
