Accra, Dec. 11, GNA - Officer Cadet (OCdt) Gershon Anerboi Abbey of the Ghana Army is to receive the most prestigious award ever presented to a Ghanaian officer on completion of training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), United Kingdom.
A statement issued by the British High Commission in Accra and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the life for a young officer in training at RMAS was challenging, stimulating and, above all, rewarding.
It noted that however, the standard was exceptionally high, and not every officer cadet would make the grade – but those who do would know that they had excelled at one of the world’s toughest and most revered military training academies.
It said with an illustrious history stretching back more than 200 years, RMAS had moulded generals, including Ghana’s very own Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of Army Staff, Heads of State and captains of industry – many of whom are drawn from foreign military organisations who want their officers to be the best.
It noted that the academy continues to be a global centre of excellence for leadership to this day and has in recent times trained officers from over 90 different countries.
It said on Friday, December 14, at the Sovereign’s Parade to mark the successful completion of officer training, OCdt Abbey would be recognised through presentation of the International Sword of Honour by the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William.
It said this award was the premier one available to international officers; adding that, it would be presented to the best International Officer Cadet and OCdt Abbey, is the latest of over 160 Ghanaian Army Officers to graduate from Sandhurst. He had beaten stiff competition from officers drawn from across the world.
It said this was an historic achievement by a young officer who had delivered a performance that has been described as ‘superb’.
It said OCdt Abbey’s achievement was immense and it was historic – no other Ghana Army Officer had received this prestigious award.
The statement said it was extremely fitting therefore that, he would receive the International Sword from Prince William, as the personal representative of The Queen, at the Sovereign’s Parade.
The statement said OCdt Abbey would return to Ghana shortly after the Parade to assume his duties with the Ghana Army.
It said meanwhile, three of OCdt Abbey colleagues continue their training at RMA Sandhurst, seeking to emulate his success.
The RMAS is where all officers in the British Army are trained to take on the responsibility of leading their fellow soldiers.
During training, all officer cadets learn to live by the academy’s motto: ‘Serve to Lead’.
Other Nations choose to send their personnel to RMAS for Officer training because it is recognised as a world leading military training academy.
