Accra Jan. 17, GNA – The Odorna market has been temporarily closed down to allow for investigations into the cause of the fire that swept through the place on Wednesday night and completely destroyed over 100 stores.
The decision was taken jointly by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the security services.
The market is expected to remain shut for about four days.
Nii Adei Sowah, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has already been there to see for himself the extent of the damage and vowed to punish anybody found to have started it.
He said the metropolitan assembly would act on the report of the investigation.
It would additionally ensure that agencies assigned specific tasks performed.
There is growing suspicion that the fire was caused by a cooking stove.
Madam Adwoa Kyeiwaa, the Market Queen, claimed that “some people have been cooking, sleeping and living at the market.
“We have been complaining to authorities about this but they would simply not act.
“This is the third fire outbreak and we are going to need help to start all over again.”
She said under the market regulations, all trading activities should end at 1800 hours but many of the traders’ continue to ignore this and would not leave the place.
