Accra, Jan. 24, GNA – The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) is to tap the expertise of prominent and seasoned journalists to constitute the 70th Anniversary Planning Committees to ensure a successive year-long commemoration.
Mr Roland Affail Monney, GJA President told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that, the association would announce the various planning committees next month and identified some of the personalities as Mr Ransford Tetteh former GJA President, Mr Bright Blewu former GJA Secretary, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, Director of Communications, Melcom Group of companies.
The GJA President said the platinum anniversary prompts the biggest celebration ever to signify GJA’s longevity, “we will open a GJA Hall of Fame to honour journalists who have worked hard to develop the country as part activities to mark the anniversary”.
Mr Monney said the anniversary would also showcase the media development and the contribution of journalist towards nation building.
He said the President of the International Journalists, President of the African Federation of Journalists, and the President of the West Africa Journalist Association would be among high profile personalities to participate in the celebration.
He said the association also intend to invite Media Unions from neighbouring countries like Cote d’ Ivoire.
Mr Monney said the GJA’s other activities expected to whip-up enthusiasm in the celebration include Symposia, Sporting programme for both men and women, tag of peace among others.
He said as part of the anniversary the association would honour distinguished journalists who have contributed immensely towards the upliftment and the growth of the media, including Mr Edward Ameyibor former GJA President.
Others are Mr Kwasi Pratt, Alhaji Kweku Baako who risked their lives to defending media freedom and the fight against authoritarian rule, stressing that the full list of would be published after due consultation.
He said outstanding construction works at the Ghana International Press Centre would also be completed. “When completed the new press centre is going to have studios demarcated car park, restaurant, big auditorium which will seat 1,500 people to befit the status of Ghanaian journalists.
Mr Monney said current and former Presidents of Ghana, other high-profile personalities from the government, political, academia, private sector, business community, the diplomatic corps, the clergy, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders would be invited to grace the celebration.
The GJA was founded in 1949 and has become the umbrella organisation representing Ghanaian journalists.
