Klikor (V/R), Feb. 23, GNA - Voting in the decentralised National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primary took an early and unhindered start at the Unity Park, Klikor, in the Ketu South Constituency with voters in long queues.
The election is to pick a candidate, out of seven aspirants, to lead the Party in the 2020 presidential election.
A total of 1,872 delegates from 208 constituencies, nine from each branch, are expected to vote from 0700 hours to 1700 hours.
Also participating are 30 foreign delegates from Togo and Nigeria, for whom a special booth has been mounted in addition to the two for resident delegates.
At about 0830 hours, when the Ghana News Agency visited, a total of 274 delegates, including 10 from outside Ghana - Togo and Nigeria, had already voted.
Mr Bright Kumordzi, the NDC Ketu South Constituency Chairman, told the GNA that the polls had, so far, gone on well and expressed confidence of a successful exercise.
Mr Abubakari Aminu, an Officer with the Electoral Commission (EC), supervising the polls, commended the comportment of the delegates and said all was well.
The large Unity Park, housing the Klikor Unity School, a public basic school, was almost filled to capacity by delegates and Party loyalists, some of whom were heard having jovial conversations.
Police personnel on duty were virtually idle except for directing persons arriving at the gate on motorbikes to park them at designated places, about 250 meters away from the voting centre.
Ketu South is a known NDC support base and often touted as its election "World Bank," having garnered massive votes for the Party in both presidential and parliamentary polls since 1992.
Contesting the flagbearer position are former President John Dramani Mahama, Professor Joshua Alabi, a former Rector of the University of Professional Studies, Mr Sylvester Mensah, a former CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority, Mr Alban Sumani Bagbin, Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Goosie Tanoh, a Businessman, Mr Spio Garbrah, a former Trade Minister, and Alhaji Nurideen Iddrisu, a Businessman.
