Accra, Feb. 23, GNA - Voting for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flaggership election at Ayawaso East Constituency is ongoing smoothly.
The election, which is taking place at the Nima Cluster of Schools, started around 0730 hours due to delay in the arrangement of electoral materials.
Mr Azila Innocent, the Returning Officer, in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA), said all materials for the election were available.
He said a total of 814 delegates were expected to cast their ballots at the centre.
“We have all the materials for the election available and we do not have any challenge so far. 814 delegates are expected to vote at this polling station,” he said.
Mr Olabode Williams, the NDC Chairman for the Constituency, expressed confidence that voting would end successfully.
“My expectation is that we have a peacefully and successful election and by the end of today’s election, irrespective of which candidate wins, we will come together and support that candidate for victory in Election 2020,” he said.
Mr Olabode said his constituency was one of the most peaceful constituencies in the country.
“The Ayawaso East Constituency is the most peaceful constituency in Ghana since 1992, we have never experienced any election violence in this constituency.”
“Although there are some misconceptions that people in the Zongo communities are violent when it comes to elections, we have not had any of such experiences here. I am very sure that today’s internal election will end peacefully.”
Mr Yahaya Mohammed Barani, the Constituency Secretary, corroborated the peaceful nature of the election and expressed confidence it would end well.
