Bongo (UE), March 15, GNA – TEERE, a local based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has handed over medical supplies, equipment and furniture worth 500,000 Euros to the Bongo District Hospital to improve on health care delivery.
The donation was in response to the Bongo Community’s request for assistance at the district hospital during the TEERE’s Local Government Forum (TLGF), programme organized organised by the NGO at both district and regional levels in the Upper East Region.
The support was funded by the International Children Help (ICH) and Senior Expert Services (SES); two German based NGOs.
The gesture, included 66 beds, 66 tables, 50 cabinets, 118 chairs, 25 bedside lockers, ultrasound, chest drawers, respirators, electrocardiogram and many others.
The gift is the second time TEERE is supporting the hospital since 2017. Handing over the items to the management of the hospital in Bongo, Professor Ephraim Nsoh Avea, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TEERE who explained that Ernst Knapp, a German Philanthropist provided funds to transport the items to Bongo, indicated that it was part of efforts to help address the numerous challenges confronting the hospital.
Professor Avea revealed that as part of the support to improve on quality health care system in the district and its environs, the SES would train staff and management of the hospital to build their capacities, knowledge and skills to enable them provide quality healthcare services to clients and to properly maintain the equipment presented to them.
The CEO reiterated his outfit’s commitment to continue to partner effectively with other organizations to provide support to the district and improve on the lives of the people.
Mr Gerhard Lauth, Senior Expert of SES noted that his outfit had collaborated with TEERE on numerous occasions and would continue to offer support to develop the area.
He appealed to the authorities to reconsider the clearance levy at the ports to promote smooth passage of the goods into the country.
Dr William Gudu, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, expressed gratitude to TEERE and its development partners, ICH and SES for their kind gesture and promised to put them into purposeful use to derive maximum benefits.
He said the facility, which was converted into a district hospital in 1996, has not had much infrastructural development, which he described as a serious challenge to the provision of quality health care services, especially with the incessant population growth and referral cases that come to the hospital from six other health centres in the district.
Dr Gudu, therefore, expressed the hope that the gesture would significantly address some of the challenges confronting the hospital, especially the Children’s Ward, which has been bedevilled with serious problems including the lack of beds.
Madam Paulina Patience Abayage, the Upper East Regional Minister receiving the donation on behalf of management of the hospital, indicated that the gesture was probably the biggest any institution in the region had ever received.
She said most of the items were very expensive and were not even found in the Regional Hospital, and added that, the management of the hospital should inculcate maintenance culture to ensure that the items lasted and achieved the purpose for which they were donated.
Whilst commending TEERE and its partners for improving health care in the district over the years, Madam Abayage lauded the staff of the hospital for their impressive performance, especially for last year when they recorded zero maternal death, and said it was as result of the hospital's achievements that encouraged the NGOs to support the it.
