Kumasi, March, 25, GNA – The Kumasi Zoological Gardens, will soon be rehabilitated and upgraded to an ultra-modern animal sanctuary in the city, to attract more tourists and lovers of nature.
The 62-old year facility is strategically located very closed to Kejetia, the commercial hub of the city.
Built alongside the Kumasi Centre for National Culture, the primary aim was to allow for the connection of nature in the delivery of culture, however, such an important facility, has not seen any major rehabilitation since.
Dr Meryir Ziekah, Manager and Resident Veterinary of the gardens, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Kumasi, that it was time to give a modern facelift to the only national sanctuary, with different types of animal species in the Country.
He said the upgraded gardens, dreamt to become the nation’s “Treasure Land of Nature”, would have walkways, playgrounds, snack bars, new cages for animals and other facilities that would give pleasure and relaxation to visitors and tourists to rake in more revenue for the country.
The Zoo Manager was however not happy that the current deplorable state of the gardens, had affected patronage of both local and international visitors.
“There were currently 34 species of animals made up of lions, elephants, Monkeys, snakes, eagle, ostrich, owl, tortoise, among others”, he added.
Dr Ziekah said, procreation to increase the animal population, was also challenge since most of them were single and therefore could not mate.
He called on corporate bodies and individuals to assist the facility either in kind or in cash, to realise its dream of becoming.
