Ga Traditional Council announces ban on noise-making

Accra, April 10, GNA – The Ga Traditional Council (GTC) has placed a monthlong ban on drumming, noise-making and funerals in the Ga Traditional Area with effect from May 13 to June 13, 2019.

The Council said this was to allow the chiefs and elders of the Ga State to perform the “Mmaadumor Rite” (planting of millet), which precedes the Ga Homowo Festival.

Nii Dodoo Nsaki II, the Acting President of the GTC, announced this at a news conference held at the Ga Mantse Palace at Kaneshie in Accra on Wednesday.

He said: “During this period the traditional authorises will pray to the gods for much rainfall and bounty harvest, pray for mother Ghana, and pray against evil.”

Nii Dodoo Nsaki said within the period the public must avoid clapping of hands, use of noisy musical instruments, positioning of loud speakers outside the church premises and mosques, and use of equipment by roadside evangelists.

“These guidelines must be observed in the interest of national peace and security,” he said.

He said a task force has been constituted to work in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the Police to monitor and enforce the ban.

Nii Dodoo Nsaki called on the general Christian and Muslim communities as well as traditional authorities to show respect to one another and restrain their followers from making derogatory statements about the beliefs and practices of one another’s religion.

“The public must patiently bear with this aspect of the Ga Dangme culture and refrain from noise making. This will ensure good neighbourliness and peaceful co-existence,” he said.
