Shama (WR), April 17, GNA - The Shama District Chief Executive, Mr. Joseph Amoah has called on Assembly Members to organize regular communal labour in their various communities to desilt and clear drains to improve upon Sanitation and reduce floods.
He pointed out that as the rains had set in, it will come with floods, which the district had its own peculiar challenges so far as drainage was concerned.
The DCE made the call when he addressed the 4th Session of the 3rd assembly at Shama.
He said it was pertinent to put in place measures such as the construction of proper drains to help direct run - off water to prevent the loss of lives and property.
Mr Amoah hinted that Zoomlion Pest Control Team and the District Environmental Health Unit have undertaken the first quarter spraying exercise at refuse disposal sites, public drains and toilets in the komfueku/Ituma, Upper and lower Inchaban, Shama junction, Shama Apo, Shama Bentir, Shama Etsifi and Dwomo Electoral areas.
He mentioned inadequate labour force especially males, lack of sanitary tools, inadequate central refuse containers for proper waste disposal in the district, lack of vehicles for monitoring and supervision and the untimely payment of salaries to labourers as factors hindering the progress of sanitation in the Shama District.
The DCE explained that the Assembly would be securing some waste containers this year to augment what Zoomlion had provided.
He announced that some corporate organizations have also indicated their willingness to provide the assembly with refuse containers and that the additional containers would help improve upon the sanitation situation in the district.
Mr. Percy Ahenakwah, Presiding Member of the Assembly brought to bare the worrying nature of sand winning, which had intensified in the district.
He said it would be prudent to put in place pragmatic measures that would streamline the operations of the sand winners and ensure that the lands were reclaimed.
