Garu (UE) April 17, GNA - Religious bodies across the Upper East Region have held an interdenominational prayer service for victims of the gory accident on section of the Kintampo road on March 27.
The Bus which was travelling from Garu to Kumasi collided with another bus from Accra where about 57 passengers on board died.
The prayer which was organised in conjunction with the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council and the Garu and Tempane District Assemblies brought together various religious groups including; Christians, Moslems and traditional worshipers who took turns to say prayers for the dead.
Madam Patience Paulina Abayage, Upper East Regional Minister who was at the event charged drivers who ply long distances to have enough rest before driving, to avoid road accidents.
She called on private transport unions to collaborate with stakeholders including; the police to ensure that each bus travelling from the region to southern Ghana moved with two drivers so that they could always relieve one another.
Madam Abayage said plans were far advanced to institute legal committees that would work with insurance companies to collect the insurance claims for deceased relatives and survived injured victims.
She disclosed that apart from the 57 persons recorded from the Garu area, two persons were from Kasena-Nankana, five from Bongo and two from the Bawku West districts.
The Minister called on commuting members of the public to be mindful and careful when on the road so as to reduce road accidents to protect the human resource for the development of the country.
Naba Asigri Abugragoe Azoka ll Paramount Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area in a speech read on his behalf by Mr Patrick Adakudugu lamented on the careless nature of some drivers and urged government to institute measures to curb the menace.
The Paramount Chief noted “we cannot help trying to think about the cause of the accident and how such a situation could be prevented in the future”.
He added, “even as lay people we know that most of our commercial drivers do not take enough rest and doze off while driving on our high ways. Some even rely on smoking and taking other substances to keep them awake”, he added.
He urged transport regulatory bodies to see the urgent need to strengthen and adequately enforce the law to deal with safety issues on the roads.
About 23 communities in the Garu and Tempane districts were affected.
