Armaaman (E/R), April 17, GNA – The Armaaman Mantse, Barima Armaakwaafio II, has built a 20 seater toilet and bath facility for the people in his community near Asamankese in the Eastern Region.
The GH¢201,430.60 facility is intended to aid the community members and enhance good sanitation practices and address open defecation in Armaaman and its environs.
It will also prevent cholera, typhoid and other related sicknesses which come as a result of unhygienic practices and indiscriminate defecation in the open.
The 20-seater facility has 10 male and 10 female places of convenience as well as 10 bathrooms, five each for males and females and a bedroom, kitchen and an office.
Addressing the people at the commissioning ceremony, Barima Armaakwaafio II said they would charge GH¢1.00 and 0.50 pesewas for the bath and toilet facilities respectively to raise funds to pay workers, maintain the facility and pay utility bills.
He said the deplorable nature of roads in the district was contributing to the reduction in revenue collection as the farmers could not take their produce to the market centres to sell for the assembly to take tax from them.
The Upper West Akim District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Eugene Sackey said the assembly in partnership with the Ghana First company is constructing 30 pieces of modern toilet facility in the district to help promote good sanitation activities.
He said the assembly would continue to liaise with the traditional authorities to bring development to the communities and indicated that there was an on-going electricity extension project in the district of which Armaakrom and Atokrom would benefit.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Upper West Akim Constituency, Mr Derick Asifu Bekeo said development was not the responsibility of an individual or government alone but a collective responsibility of all citizens.
He said there was the need for institutions to create the enabling environment to serve as a platform for investors and philanthropist to support the communities.
He said, mostly support from the corporate bodies and philanthropists supported and complemented the efforts of the government in diverse ways.
He urged the community members to continue sustaining the peace that the people were enjoying in the district to enhance development.
