Ho, June 12, GNA - The 45th Volta Inter-Schools Central Zone Sports festival has commenced in Ho, the Volta Regional capital.
A total of 25 government and private schools were taking part in the one-week event of which players and athletes would be selected to represent the zone in the forthcoming Inter zonal competition to be held at Nkwata in Oti Region.
The schools would be competing for trophies in various sporting disciplines such as athletics, football, volleyball, netball, handball, table tennis and basketball.
Speaking at the opening of the event, Madam Enyonam Amafuga, Volta Regional Director of Education said physical education and sports remained important subjects that provided holistic intervention to developing the cognitive and the physical aspect of the body.
She said the pivot of every human development was anchored on healthy body therefore it was important to frequently engage in acts that could keep the body healthy.
Madam Amafuga underscored the need for everyone to take a brisk walk at least 30 minutes for three times in a week to keep the body healthy and to vitalize its work load without undue fatigue.
The Regional Director said though Volta Region was noted for exhibiting superior skills in many sporting disciplines at the national level, the “performance has been experiencing a steady decline in recent times as a result of many challenges facing the development of sports and games in the Region".
She called for support from all to enhance sporting activities in the region to accelerate socio economic development.
Madam Amafuga urged all the players and athletics to give off their best, comport themselves and to desist from immoral acts.
Mr Kofi Emmanuel Atiso, the Zonal Secretary urged the participating schools to exhibit high level of discipline during the one week period.
He also urged the players to exhibit best behavior on the field of play.
In the opening game, Saint Prosper's College beat Shia Senior High School with a lone goal.
The event was sponsored by Mr. Nelson Akorli, the Ho Municipal Chief Executive and Accra Brewery Limited, producers of Beta Malt and other alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.
