Accra, June 12, GNA – The United Nations Association, Ghana (UNA-GH), a non-profit organisation dedicated to working towards UN ideals including peace, inaugurated a new branch in Accra called the UNAGH Chapter At Large.
The new chapter, which adds up to the over 20 chapters with over a million membership across the country had boundless mandate and could take up issues including, environment, health, education, economic, social and security to address.
Madam Janet Edna Nyame, the Vice President of UNA-GH, who inaugurated the chapter in Accra, said the UN’s current focus was striving with member states to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) aimed at ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring that all people enjoyed peace and prosperity
She urged members to educate people to undertake a comprehensive education on the SDGs and volunteer to work with like-minded people in various communities to achieve the global goals.
In Ghana, she said the UNA-GH had been contributing its quota towards the achievement of these global goals by undertaking campaign on peace, human rights and youth empowerment.
The Association, Madam Nyame stated, had been charged with the mandate to adopt conflict prevention measures to forge partnership and strategies to address the challenges facing certain countries in the sub-region and appealed to all and sundry to support in that endeavour.
“It is the role of every individual to contribute in one way or the other in helping to attain these global goals.
“We can contribute by establishing multi-stakeholder partnership for mobilizing and sharing knowledge, expertise, new ideas, technology and of course financial resources,” she added.
Dr Mawuli Lincoln Darlington, President of UNA-GH Chapter At Large, gave the assurance that the chapter would work to advance the mission and work of the UN guided by the purpose and principles. He appealed to well-meaning individuals, governmental and non-governmental agencies, Embassies to assist the Chapter to ensure peace in the country.
The chapter at large has 30 members and includes individuals from diverse background including the business sector, the security services, and governmental agencies.
The UNA is a member of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) whose members advocate for the values, ideals, aims and objectives of the United Nations.
The WFUNA was established to help get closer to the people with the ideals and aims of the United Nations.
