Kumasi, June 17, GNA - There was an encouraging turn-out at the Ashanti Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Kumasi on the first day of the nationwide limited voter registration exercise.
The exercise, which ends on Sunday, July 7, this year, is to allow Ghanaians who had attained 18 years and above, and not registered, to take advantage of the exercise to register.
Mr. Robert Gyamera, a Supervisor of the EC in-charge of the Registration, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the exercise had been scheduled between 7 am and 6 pm each day.
The registration, he hinted, forms part of the EC’s preparations towards the conduct of the referendum on the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), as well as the impending District Level Elections.
It comes in the wake of the recent court’s dismissal of a motion for interlocutory injunction that sought to restrain the EC from undertaking the scheduled exercise.
Mr. Gyamera pointed out that the voter management system, which had been designed to capture data of the participants directly online, had no hitch and was working perfectly.
The EC Supervisor, while urging the citizenry, especially those whose names were yet to be captured in the Voter’s Register, to strive to patronize the exercise in their own interest.
He advised the participants to bring along with them proof of their eligibility for the exercise such as valid birth certificates, passports, driver’s licenses, amongst others, in order to facilitate their registration.
