Sekondi, June 19, GNA - The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) in the Western Region has purchased a drone at the cost of GH¢150,000.00 to improve on the laborious and time consuming traditional building inspection in the Metropolis.
The purchase of the drone by the Assembly to address issues of development control is the first in the country and would enable the Assembly to quickly identify new developments springing up to improve land use orderliness in the Metropolis.
This was made known by the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Anthony K.K. Sam in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sekondi to enquire about the measures the assembly had put in place to curtail the improper settlements going on in the Metropolis.
According to him, "without proper infrastructure, we face detrimental problems of congestion, pollution and more, and to reduce the impact and take full advantage of urbanisation in making the Twin-City more functional, intense planning and use of smart technologies were required in its development and management working processes".
He hinted that a new planning regime had kick-started and that the Physical Planning Department had been tasked to commence updating the planning schemes of existing settlements with the use of the drone to accommodate the growing population.
Mr Sam reiterated the commitment of the Assembly to ensure effective development control since development in an unplanned manner constituted greater source of carbon emission, congestion and insecurity.
“As such, the city is the first in Ghana to institute a Bi-annual Development Control Week to promote land use orderliness and affordable communities.
The maiden week was held from 26th February to 2nd March, 2019 and has created the needed awareness as well as given some useful lessons”, he further hinted.
He explained that during the week celebration, the Assembly partnered the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank on the EDGE programme as a first step to promote green building in the Twin-City and that the programme would help to reduce energy, water usage and embodied energy in construction.
