Kumasi, June 20, GNA - The Ashanti Regional Directorate of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has called for the support of the Muslim leadership in its road safety campaign drive.
Making the call through the Deputy National Chief Imam of Ahlus Sunnah, Sheikh Muhammad Kamil in Kumasi, Mrs Simbiat Wiredu, the Ashanti Regional Director, underscored the need to bring such key stakeholders as the Muslim clerics on board, to stem the growing incidence of road crashes in the Region.
This was when the Regional Director led the team from the Directorate to pay a courtesy call on him.
She noted that her outfit had the confidence in the influence of the Muslim leadership to help bring down the increasing Ashanti Region road crash incidents, which resulted in 399 deaths last year.
The alarming figure, she noted, represented 20 percent of national fatalities and called for a concerted effort to halt the trend.
Mrs Wiredu advised the travelling public to patronize vehicles at approved lorry terminals for their own safety and advised them not to be apathetic but show concern in the event of reckless driving.
The Regional Director also entreated drivers to always observe road safety regulations and desist from overtaking unnecessarily, adding that, offenders could be fined or jailed if found culpable.
Expressing worry over the frequent pedestrians’ knock-downs, she took the opportunity to educate the people to always use the pedestrian crossing whenever they were crossing the road to reduce road fatalities.
Sheikh Kamil commended the NRSC for embarking on wider stakeholder consultation in the fight against the carnage on the roads and pledged his commitment to support the Commission.
He advocated for increased police presence on the roads to clamp down on reckless driving and speeding, which according to her, contributed significantly to the menace.
