BUJUMBURA, June 20, (Xinhua/GNA) - The inter-Burundi dialogue led by East African Community (EAC) has been closed and the report of conclusions of the dialogue has been submitted to the EAC, Burundi's Ombudsman Edouard Nduwimana, has said.
Nduwimana was responding to a recommendation that was made last week at a UN Security Council session by African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui of resuming the dialogue which shall be the last alternative for Burundi's reconciliation.
"Some countries continue evoking unnecessary talks instead of focusing on the 2020 elections. Such debate held at UN Security Council doesn't have any added value for Burundi," Nduwimana said.
He called on all Burundians including politicians in exile to be ready for the 2020 elections.
Launched in December 2015, the inter-Burundi dialogue is aimed at finding a solution to the political crisis in Burundi.
The central African country plunged into a crisis in April 2015 when Nkurunziza decided to run his controversial third-term bid, which he won in July 2015.
His candidature, which was opposed by the opposition and civil society groups, resulted in a wave of protests, violence and even a failed coup in May 2015.In August 2018, a roadmap to Burundi's 2020 elections was signed by most political parties in Burundi, where they agreed to peacefully participate in the polls.
