Wa, July 3, GNA - The Wa Municipal Assembly has honoured 25 senior citizens selected from the Municipality for making significant contributions to the development of the country and the Upper West Region.
The elderly men and women were presented with undisclosed items wrapped in paper bags during the Senior Citizens Day which was commemorated on the theme: ''Cerebrating senior citizens for their role in national development''.
Alhaji Issahaku Moomin Tahiru, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, said the day was fixed on 1st July every year to remember the role of senior citizens and tap into their experience as past leaders who have served the country with diligence.
The 25 senior citizens chosen for the awards, he said, was purely based on their individual contributions to national development while in office.
“The criterion used in selecting them was based on merits and even though we have a number of senior citizens out there, I think those here are lucky to be recognized by the committee that was tasked to do the selection,” he said.
Alhaji Tahiru pleaded with retired civil and public servants to continue contributing towards national development by coaching and sharing their experiences with the current workforce.
One of the awardees, Mr Henery Abanye, appealed to the MCE to work seriously on the security situation in the Municipality especially at night.
He also raised issue of poor sanitation and called on the Wa Municipal Assembly to implement the Community Led Total Sanitation Programme to eradicate open defecation in the Municipality.
“The security situation within Wa Township is becoming worse and I plead with you to work on it as we now live in fear,” he said.
