Sudan's military council pardons rebel movement prisoners

KHARTOUM, July 4, (Xinhua/GNA) - Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Wednesday issued a decision on general amnesty for prisoners of the Darfur rebel Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), led by Minni Arko Minnawi, the TMC said in a statement.

The decision comes as a gesture of goodwill towards the armed movements prior to reaching a comprehensive peace in Sudan, it noted.

According to the statement, the decision stipulated "immediate release of the SLA's 235 prisoners, unless they are wanted in other legal proceedings, effective as of the date of the issuance of the decision."

Recently, Minnawi met the TMC's Deputy Chairman Mohamed Hamdan Daqlu in Chad's capital of N'Djamena, under mediation by the Chadian President Idriss Deby.
