Fijai (W/R) July 21, GNA - Public Sector Workers have been called to work consistently in their chosen profession, be punctual and regular at work as they contribute their quota to national development.
They are also to be steadfast, despite low remunerations, lack of requisite equipment and the needed motivation as they offered their services to the state.
Mr Isaac K. Yanney, the former Head of Training at the TUC headquarters at the Western Regional Delegates Conference of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU), said getting government to understand their plight as workers and resourcing them to work must be done in ‘unionism’ for maximum support.
"We all have to be steadfast in changing things in the work place", he said.
Mr Yanney said though the Labour Act enjoins government to train and develop the capacity of its human resources, the state has continuously reneged on that function.
He said the unions were established to protect, promote and ensure that rights and responsibilities of workers were duly observed at all times.
Mr Bernard Agyei, the Chief Executive Officer of the PSWU, urged the union members to see the union as their own, saying, "I am the Union... You are the Union...We are the Union ...we have a collective responsibility to ensure that our welfare is catered to by the state".
He said state enterprises are going through lots of challenges with government either through contract management or concession agreement with its resultant arbitrariness on the part of these managers.
Mr Agyei said the constant interference in the management of some state agencies, the lack of resources to deliver on the mandate and poor performance management systems amongst others, continues to hamper quality public service delivery.
He said poor working conditions and injustices in the sector has killed the initiatives of many workers who could have contributed positively to the country's growth.
Mr Agyei called on the branches and all the teams to work together to achieve the goals of work and happiness among all workers.
Five outstanding union members were each presented with a citation and a 32 inch Digital Television set for their selfless and meritorious services to the union.
