Tempane (U/E) Nov. 7, GNA - The Tempane District Assembly is supporting over 277 People with Disabilities (PWD’s) in the area, with livestock and other livelihood empowerment opportunities to help them earn income to support themselves and their families.
The Assembly provided live stocks such as goats, sheep and fertilizer and cash, all worth 237,809 Ghana Cedis to the PWDs to enable them to start or expand their businesses while those who had the animals are expected to rear them.
This was made known at a ‘Meet the Press Series’ of the Assembly at Tempane, to showcase the Assembly’s effort in improving the livelihood conditions of the people, especially the most vulnerable in the area.
Mr Paul Azumah Abugri, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Assembly in his presentation said 328 animals were purchased for 82 PWDs, 672 bags of fertilizer for 53 farmers while cash was given to some students to support them in school and cheques worth 114,469 Ghana Cedis were presented to some PWDs who intend to go into other livelihood empowerment business ventures such as petty trading among others.
Mr Abugri said government was focused on reorganizing and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities by implementing the disability Act (715, 2006) to fully integrate the PWDs into the mainstream socio-economic life of the society.
He said the Assembly has undertaken various development projects including the construction of educational facilities such as classroom blocks and students’ accommodation block at the senior high and basic schools, to promote quality teaching and learning in the district.
Mr Abugri said the Assembly has also provided a number of health facilities including Community Based Health Services (CHPS) compounds in order to bring health care service closer to the people in the area.
He said many people had been encouraged by the government’s flagship programme such as the planting for food and jobs and the provision of subsidies on farming inputs such as fertilizer and seedlings of cash crops.
He charged the people to support government in the delivery of its policies since they are geared towards improving their living conditions and creating a development oriented society.
Mr Musah Alale Banaga, a visually impaired man and Zanyeya Adams, a 20 year- old physically challenged person from the Tubong community who spoke to the Ghana News Agency, could not hide their joy over the initiative and said “this is a life time dream come true which would help us generate income to support our families and undertake other social projects”.
