Accra, Nov. 27, GNA - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday joined the Ghana Police Service to honour the memory of police personnel who died in the line of duty this year.
At a solemn ceremony held in Accra at the Police Cenotaph Grounds, National Police Training School, Tesano, the President lighted the perpetual flame and laid a wreath on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana in remembrance of the departed.
The Police Memorial Day, institutionalised in 2014, is to immortalise and recognise the services and sacrifices of serving police officers who died while performing lawful duties within Ghana, on peace keeping mission or on international assignments.
This year's event honoured the memory of eight police officers, five of whom had their names engraved on the Wall of Honour at the Cenotaph, and the names of the remaining three inscribed on the Roll of Honour.
They included Inspector Foster Ampomah, who was knocked down and killed by a cargo truck while on motor traffic duty with his colleagues at Nante Zongo on the main Kintampo-Techiman road on September 13, and Inspector Michael Dotze Dzeameshi and General Corporal Awal Mohammed, who were both shot and killed by armed men near KAAF University while on duty on the Kasoa Highway in the Central Region.
The others are Sergeant Agatha Nana Nabin, shot and killed on July 30 by armed men while on snap check on the Kumbungu road near Star Oil Filling Station, Tamale; General Corporal George Nkwanna, killed in a road traffic accident on his way to work on October 4, and General Lance Corporal Alhassan Asare, found dead from suspected gunshot wounds while on duty at the Dukes Fuel Station at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region on August 20.
The rest are General Lance Corporal John Andoh, who was knocked down and killed instantly by a truck while on snap check duty at Kubease in the Ashanti Region on January 2, and General Corporal Bernard Antwi, killed on August 19 at Domi, near Antoakrom while escorting miners with their black gold to Manso Nkwanta Town.
The Memorial Day climaxes activities by the Services’ Administration aimed at enhancing effective co-existence between the Police and the citizenry to promote safer communities.
Throughout the week, police personnel across the country have been educating the public on crime prevention and road safety among other things to build stronger relations between the police and the public.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr James Oppong-Buanuh, laid the wreath for the Police Service while a spouse of one of the fallen, laid one for the bereaved families, and Nii Dodoo Nsaki, Otublohum Mantse, laid the wreath for the Chieftaincy Institution.
A minute’s silence was observed for the departed, and the last post was trumpeted by a bugler, as the flag was raised in their honour.
