Tarkwa (W/R), Nov. 27, GNA - The Mineral Development Fund (MDF) Board has initiated a survey to identify sustainable alternative livelihood interventions for the various mining communities in the country.
The status report indicates that over twenty of the interventions include; an oil palm processing plant, agricultural equipment leasing, small cargo transport service to farmers, school feeding Programme, market aggregate opportunity, household electronics and appliances repair hubs.
The rest are; vehicle testing and licensing facilities with attached automobile engineering center, free school uniform opportunity for local fashion designers, technical training of youth via scholarships and establishment of institutions to outsourced services from mines and other companies operating within the Districts.
Madam Esther Happy Edjeani, Chairperson of Minerals Development Fund (MDF), made this known when she addressed stakeholders at the inaugural ceremony of the Tarkwa Local Management Committee (LMC).
She said when the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Asomah Cheremeh, inaugurated the MDF Board on April 11, this year, they were tasked to facilitate processes for the establishment of LMC.
Madam Edjeani said the Board had to evaluate the implementation of the fund, establish structures to undertake research and development projects including sustainable alternative livelihood programmes.
She told the stakeholders that the final report of the survey would be made available to the respective LMC’s to serve as a guide in selecting suitable Alternative Livelihood Interventions programmes for the MDF Board’s consideration.
Madam Edjeani said the Board respects the right, culture and traditions of the citizenry and believes in a bottom-up approach for local development.
She called on members of the committee to open up when engaging with communities and ensure that they understand their plight, prioritize their requests and apply funds efficiently to assist the Board to achieve its mandate.
She congratulated all the members and pledged the Board’s commitment and support in their endeavors.
