Hohoe (V/R), Nov. 28, GNA - A reconstituted 14-member Board of Governors of the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School (HEPSS) in the Volta Region has been inaugurated with members urged to make academic excellence a priority.
The members have also been tasked to share their rich experiences, strength and abilities to guide and direct management of the School to raise morally upright youth for national development.
Madam Enyonam Afi Amafuga, Acting Volta and Oti Regional Director of Education, said the Board was appointed at a time when second cycle institutions faced numerous challenges.
These include indiscipline, downward trend of academic performances, practice of occultism, homosexuality, inadequate infrastructure, teaching and learning materials and other logistics and asked the members to rise to the occasion.
The Regional Director said the Board was capable of tackling challenges of the School, adding that students who were not beneficiaries under the Free Senior High School still owed the School and must endeavour to clear all arrears.
She called on parents to use monies they would have used for payment of fees to cater for other needs of their children that the government may not provide.
Madam Amafugah called for cooperation among the Board, staff, students and the local community for peace to prevail in the School in order to focus attention on achieving its mission and vision.
She asked students and staff to eschew all forms of immoral acts and indiscipline and focus on achieving good academic results.
Mr. Franklin Amesimeku, the Headmaster of the School, said he was hopeful that the Board would help the School to find solutions to challenges confronting it and reposition it for improved academic performance.
He mentioned the lack of funds, unavailability of assembly hall, compelling the School to hold events under trees, the deplorable state of the dining hall and boys’ dormitory, and absence of fence wall with stray animals invading the School, as some of the major challenges.
He said the School land was being encroached on and appealed to the Board and the chiefs to help settle outstanding issues concerning the land.
Rev. Augustine K. Baltes, the former Board Chairman, expressed gratitude to Management and the old Board members for the cooperation during his tenure and called on the new members to work hard and tackle the concerns.
