Savelugu (N/R), Dec. 12, GNA - Youth Empowerment for Life (YEfL), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), based in the Northern Region has held a district education accountability forum to engage stakeholders on how to improve on the performance of pupils in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) in the Savelugu Municipality of the Northern Region.
The forum was attended by representatives from the Ghana Education Service (GES), Savelugu Municipal Assembly, School Management Committee (SMC) Networks, District Youth Network (DYN), head teachers and some selected students within the municipality with funding support from OXFAM Ghana.
Mr Mahama Aminu, a Project Officer at YEfL, expressed worry about the poor performance of pupils in the BECE in the municipality saying it is necessary to put in place measures to improve on the situation.
Mr Iddrisu Abdulai Kofi, Human Resource Manager at the Savelugu Municipal Directorate of the GES, said in 2017 and 2018 respectively, 43.0 per cent and 53.6 per cent of pupils passed the BECE, with many female candidates performing poorly compared to their male counterparts.
He said out of a total of 216 districts in the country, the Savelugu Municipal placed 203 and 180 positions in 2017 and 2018 respectively in the national BECE league table.
The participants attributed the poor performance of pupils in the Municipality to poor monitoring and supervision of teachers by the GES, as well as issues of inadequate teaching and learning materials.
They again cited inadequate classroom blocks and furniture as well as non-commitment of some teachers, as factors that has led to poor performance of basic schools in the district.
They proposed the need for the GES to intensify its monitoring and supervision exercise in order to help reduce the problem in the area.
The stakeholders appealed to government and other corporate bodies to help provide the necessary resources needed to enhance the performance of basic school pupils in the Municipality.
