Nkawkaw (E/R), Dec. 12, GNA - The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in collaboration with the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly have launched its road safety education, training and Christmas road safety campaigns at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region.
The launch which was held on the theme, 'Stop road accidents now, before it stops you', was to educate high risk drivers on the need to properly maintain their vehicles to help minimize the rampant road carnages in the country.
Mr Abdulai Bawa Ghamsah, the Eastern Regional Manager of the NRSC said, the commission had put three days aside to train over 40 registered long journey drivers in the municipality on road safety.
He said over 180 people lose their lives through road accidents every month due to drivers’ carelessness and refusal to heed to road signs.
He said the training would informed drivers on the need to regularly maintain their vehicles.
Mr Ghamsah said, there was the need for drivers to often upgrade themselves through training and workshops to be enlightened on operations of new types of technology with new vehicles.
Mr Andy Ametepe, the Eastern Regional Director of the DVLA, advised drivers to patronize the newly introduced DVLA office in the municipality to help maintain their vehicles to minimize road accidents.
Mr Yaw Owusu Addo, Kwahu West Municipal Chief Executive said that about two per cent of the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is lost due to road accidents as a result of improper handling of vehicles by drivers.
He said this year alone, over 991 road accidents have been recorded in the municipality, whilst 298 persons perished with 189 sustaining various injuries.
Mr Owusu-Addo therefore urged drivers to insist on passengers wearing their seatbelts before embarking on any journey.
